If you read Haircut (which you should, since this is a continuation story) you know that shortly after graduating college I unexpectedly ended up unemployed before my first day.
With a lease and no job I was scrambling to send out resumes and try to line up interviews. After a couple week I lined up an interview with a nearby tech company that had me very excited given my situation. I showed up for the interview, had a nice long interaction and things were going great, but then they asked me a question about other places I had interviewed.
I was just starting my career, a little desperate, and rather naive, so I made the rookie mistake and gave them all of the requested information. The interviewer made a polite excuse and stepped away for a few minutes, but then when he returned started grilling me about what happened at the previous company (from Haircut).
I did my best to calmly and diplomatically explain that they had chosen to change the terms of my employment after signing my offer and that I had resigned my position before the first day. The interviewer became increasingly aggressive, accused me of lying to him, and eventually let it slip that the other company had claimed they fired me for being a no-call/no-show. So my other (earlier) rookie mistake was failing to get written confirmation of my resignation.
With that, two companies conspiring, a bursting dot com bubble, and my own naivety and I was once again searching for a job.
