It was the first day of work at a new job. This is always a day full of nerves, but I was excited about this job. The interviews had gone well, I had gotten to meet my team and they were all excited for me to join, the culture was warm and inviting, and the dress code was basically "wear clothing."
There I am in the orientation meeting when the department head came in to say hi, and launches into a ten-minute rant about how unprofessional it is to wear unusual clothes or dye hair in unnatural colors and that anyone who does this will never make it anywhere in their career.
All while I was sitting there in the center of the front row, with bright blue hair, dressed in all black goth clothes.
Needless to say, it changed my opinion of the workplace just a bit.
