The franchise location manager at a chain of brand-name franchised massage clinics was a piece of work on a good day. She would say anything to your face to make you feel like you were a part of her inner circle, but would immediately throw you under the bus in front of other employees, clients, or her superiors.
She was also generally ineffective at managing behavioral issues amongst the employees, which had ramifications in terms of things like keeping the clinic clean and keeping providers on staff (there was significant attrition during her term as manager). One day she was acting really odd; she had this intense level of energy nobody had seen from her before; her eyes were glassy, but she was also oddly calm, in a way.
That night she ended up keeping the assistant manager, who had a husband and an infant son at home, at the location until 5:00 am, trying to do heaven-only-knows-what. She also said and did some pretty inappropriate things to that poor assistant manager outside of just keeping her overnight. By the end of business the next day, the main office of the franchisee put her on administrative leave, and she ended up resigning within a few days.
Unfortunately, it turned out that she had not been taking her doctor-prescribed medication to manage a mental health condition, and it affected everything in her life, not just work. Hopefully in the end things came out okay for her, but the clinic was better off for having a change in management.
I wish her well, but I was incredibly glad not to work under her after that.
