Local Startup Selected as AcceliCITY Finalist
FlexePark, a shared parking solution that creates public spaces from private lots, has been selected as a finalist for the 2019 Leading Cities AcceliCITY program.
In 2018, Leading Cities, a global nonprofit for Smart City growth and collaboration, launched AcceliCITY—a global Smart City startup competition that provides potential capital from a network of investors as well as the tools and knowledge of how to do business with cities. FlexePark was selected as one of 14 finalists from more than 500 applications and 43 countries.
“Mobility within cities is the lifeblood of the local economy, a bridge to reducing equity gaps, and a means to access healthcare, education and jobs. Congestion within our cities brings these opportunities to a halt,” states Michael Lake, President and CEO of Leading Cities. “FlexePark addresses one of the greatest challenges with urban traffic—accessing much-needed parking. With an estimated 33 percent of traffic being generated by cars searching for parking, FlexePark is reducing traffic, reducing carbon emissions, and monetizing otherwise underutilized assets.”
The finalists now compete for paid pilot projects, hosted by cities in the areas of Smart Mobility and Smart Water. In addition to competing for the opportunity to implement these pilot projects, all finalists of the AcceliCITY program will receive additional support and prizes including global visibility.
FlexePark was developed as a solution to the lack of public parking options in metro areas. Through FlexePark, local businesses generate extra income by making their unused parking available to the community, usually after business hours. Drivers simply scan the QR code on a FlexePark space sign to securely pay a flat parking fee.
